When an aspiring aquarist gets his or her first aquarium, it will usually soon be inhabited by some of the most commonly available tropical fish species sold to beginners, such as neon tetra, guppy or perhaps a goldfish. Sooner or later, a successful aquarist does however usually develop an urge to keep something else and this is the point when a lot of aquarists start investigating the beautiful and fascinating cichlid family. You probably already recognize some of the most well known names: Angelfish, Jack Dempsey, Oscar and so on. Within the aquarium hobby, cichlids are commonly divided into three main groups: South American cichlids, Central and North American cichlids, and African cichlids. There are Asian cichlids as well, but they are not as commonly kept as the other tree groups. Among the African cichlids, it is common to distinguish between Tanganyika cichlids, Malawi cichlids, Victoria cichlids and Other cichlids. Tanganyika, Malawi and Victoria are the names of three major lakes on the African continent. The Other African cichlids are found in other lakes, or in other bodies of water such as rivers and streams. You might also stumble over the term Dwarf cichlids, but this is not a geographically limited population. All the dwarf cichlid species can be placed in either the African or in one of the American groups.
